    Whatever Happened to the Rockingbirds is a more subdued, introspective collection than the group's debut; Alan Tyler's songs -- especially the stunning "I Woke Up One Morning" -- are uniformly excellent, the harmonies are gorgeous, and Edwyn Collins' production sparkles. Never tongue-in-cheek or self-conscious, the only hint of irony here derives from the fact that one of the most authentic.
